Redlands Symphony: An Evening of Firsts

  • Memorial Chapel 1200 East Colton Avenue Redlands, CA, 92374 United States (map)

In 1950, the Redlands Symphony gathered for its first concert. As we begin our 70th Season, it seems fitting to explore an entire evening of “firsts”.

Beethoven’s First Symphony shows the clear influence of his predecessors— especially Haydn and Mozart. But the surprisings shifts and dramatic moments that we’ve come to know as Beethoven’s unique voice were present even in this early work, which remains a favorite of musicians and audiences alike.

Like Beethoven, Mahler’s powerful personality is already on full display in his First Symphony, and this majestic music sets the tone for the monumental masterpieces to come.

To commemorate 70 seasons of classical music right here in Redlands, we’re adding a “first” of our own to the evening— the world premiere of Sean Friar’s Redlands Fanfare, commissioned in celebration of our 70th anniversary!
